Thanksgiving in Portugal
Do they celebrate Thanksgiving in Portugal?
Here in Portugal, we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving. We celebrate the harvest in September and October. For example, Festa do Vinho Madeira (grape harvest in Madeira) was from 8 to 24 October in 2021. And Wine & Music Valley in Lamego (grape harvest in the Douro Valley) was from 10 to 11 September in 2021.
Saint Martin’s Day – 11 November
Dia de São Martinho is not the harvest celebration. During Saint Martin’s Day, go to the wine cellar and try the wine. That is the perfect day to check the wine quality. For this reason, this saint is considered to be the protector of sommeliers and barrel makers. On Saint Martin’s day, we eat chestnuts and drink wine or other typical drinks. Such as Port wine, ginjinha, and jeropiga (sweet wine made of grape must and firewater). This celebration is known as magusto, and this word comes from Latin it means great fire.
Martinho was a roman soldier who saw a poor man on a snowing day. The soldier gave his cape to help this poor man be warm. After that, the sun started to shine and stopped snowing.
To remember this legend, we always call the summer of Saint Martin. When the temperature increases in the middle of fall. It is like Indian Summer in the United States.
