Thanksgiving in Portugal

Thanksgiving in PortugalDo they celebrate Thanksgiving in Portugal?

Thanksgiving, as traditionally celebrated in the United States, is not a recognized holiday in Portugal. However, our country does have its own unique celebrations that focus on the harvest season.

In Portugal, we commemorate the harvest during the months of September and October. Various festivals and events take place across the country, highlighting the abundance of agricultural products and the importance of this bountiful time of the year. One such example is the Festa do Vinho Madeira, which celebrates the grape harvest in the region of Madeira. This lively festival typically takes place from the 8th to the 24th of October, showcasing the vibrant wine culture and traditions of the area.

Another notable event is the Wine & Music Valley in Lamego, which pays tribute to the grape harvest in the picturesque Douro Valley. Held from the 10th to the 11th of September in 2021, this festival combines the pleasures of fine wine and live music, creating an immersive experience that celebrates the unique terroir and wine-making heritage of the region.

While Thanksgiving may not be part of our cultural calendar, we embrace our own harvest celebrations, which honor the agricultural richness and traditions that have shaped Portugal’s culinary and viticultural heritage.

Saint Martin’s Day – 11 November

Saint Martin’s Day, known as “Dia de São Martinho” in Portugal, holds a special significance in our culture, although it is not directly associated with the harvest celebration. On this day, we have a unique tradition that revolves around wine and indulging in the flavors of the season.

During Saint Martin’s Day, it is customary to visit the wine cellar and partake in the tasting of the year’s new wine. This day serves as a perfect opportunity to assess the quality of the wine, making it a significant occasion for wine enthusiasts and professionals alike. In fact, Saint Martin is considered the patron saint of sommeliers and barrel makers, emphasizing the importance of this event in our wine culture.

Accompanying the wine, we also savor traditional delicacies such as chestnuts, which are in season during this time. These chestnuts, paired with the wine, create a delightful culinary experience that epitomizes the flavors of the season. Additionally, other typical beverages such as Port wine, ginjinha (a cherry liqueur), and jeropiga (a sweet wine made from grape must and firewater) are also enjoyed during this festive occasion.

This celebration is known as “magusto,” a term derived from Latin meaning “great fire.” It refers to the tradition of gathering around bonfires and enjoying the company of friends and family while relishing the warmth of the fire and the flavors of the season. The ambiance created by these bonfires adds to the jovial spirit of Saint Martin’s Day.

The origins of this celebration are rooted in a legend associated with Saint Martin himself. According to the tale, Saint Martin, a Roman soldier, encountered a poor man on a snowy day. Moved by compassion, he selflessly gave the man his cape to provide warmth and comfort. Miraculously, as a result of this act of kindness, the weather cleared, and the sun began to shine, ending the snowfall.

In remembrance of this legend, we refer to the period after Saint Martin’s Day as the “summer of Saint Martin.” It is characterized by a sudden increase in temperature during the middle of autumn, akin to the concept of Indian Summer in the United States. This atmospheric phenomenon serves as a reminder of the generosity and warmth that Saint Martin displayed.

So, as Saint Martin’s Day approaches, immerse yourself in this unique celebration, relishing the flavors of the season, toasting with new wine, and gathering around the warmth of bonfires. It’s a time-honored tradition that brings people together, allowing us to savor the essence of Portuguese culture and hospitality.
